Mumford Physician Biographies

Dr. Sue Atkinson

Dr. Atkinson was born in Merritt, British Columbia,  grew up in Saskatchewan and Alberta and went to high school in Sussex, New Brunswick where her parents still live. She graduated from Dalhousie University in 1986 with BSc Psych, MD in 1990 and completed her Family Medicine training at Dalhousie University in 1992. She started practicing Family Medicine in 1992 in Halifax. Her medical interests include Obstetrics, Women’s Health, Sexual Health, LGBTIQ Health. She has a teaching appointment from Dalhousie University as Assistant professor and has been teaching students and residents since 1993.

Dr. Atkinson enjoys hiking, camping and kayaking. She also sings in a small A Capella choir. She has an interest in dog training and enjoys hanging out with her dog Fonzie.

Dr. Fiona Bergin

Dr. Bergin grew up in Nova Scotia. She graduated from Dalhousie University in 1991 and started practicing Family Medicine in 1992 in Halifax. Her medical interests include medical education, medical education research especially on issues related to professionalism and remediation. 

She has a teaching appointment from Dalhousie University and started teaching medical students and residents in 1996.  She is a member of Population Health, Ethical, Legal, and Organizational Aspects of Medicine Test Committee.

Dr. Barry Clarke

Dr. Clarke grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He graduated from Dalhousie University in 1987 and completed his Family Medicine training in 1989. He started practicing Family Medicine in Halifax in 1989. His medical interests include Geriatrics. He has a teaching appointment from Dalhousie and started teaching medical students and residents in 1990.

Dr. Clarke lives in Halifax with his wife Kelly. He has 3 wonderful children and likes sailing.

Dr. Daralyn DeBaie

Dr. DeBaie grew up in Porters Lake on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore and attended Dalhousie University for her undergraduate biology degree. She then worked for a couple of years as a Forest Ecologist in Truro, NS before attending medical school at Dal. She completed her residency from Dalhousie’s Halifax site in 2011. She did locum, urgent care, and family medicine obstetrics work in HRM before joining the department in 2021. She is on Team 2 at Mumford and is a prenatal/obstetrics provider and a procedures clinic provider. She is an NRP instructor and is registered to be a certified PoCUS (point of care ultrasound) provider in 2023. She is also the Assistant Postgraduate Program Site Director at the Halifax Site.

Her interests outside of work include being a hockey mom of three children, camping, skiing and mountain biking.

Dr. Roetka Gradstien

Dr. Gradstein joined the Department of Family Medicine at Dalhousie in 2021. She completed her Masters of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1999 and Medical School/Family Medicine Residency from Dalhousie University in 2009. She ran a community family practice for 12 years and developed this into a supportive, collaborative group with multidisciplinary team members. Her special interests are family medicine obstetrics, medical education, medical abortion, multidisciplinary collaboration, group medical visits, breastfeeding medicine, medical humanities and system improvements in primary care. She is constantly seeking expanded scope and practice improvements and leaning into the discomfort of change. She has also enjoyed locums in NWT, medical humanitarian work in Haiti and geriatric/long term care work.

She has two children and two pugs.

Dr. Jacalynne Hernandez-Lee

Dr. Hernandez-Lee grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia and did her undergraduate training at University of British Columbia in 2012. She did her Family medicine training at Dalhousie University, Sydney site in 2014. Dr. Hernandez-Lee has practiced family medicine in Whtiehorse, Yukon and  Halifax Regional Municipality. Her medical interests include; primary care obstetrics and procedures. She has a teaching appointment from Dalhousie University Department of Family Medicine. She started teaching medical students in 2014.

Dr. Hernandez- Lee enjoys cooking and hiking with her dog.

Dr. Helena Piccinini

Dr. Piccinini grew up in Brazil, USA , Switzerland, and then Canada. She graduated from MSc in 1986 and MD Dalhousie in 1990. She has practiced Family Medicine in Halifax , her medical interests include patient – centered clinical method and  gestational weight gain. She has a teaching appointment with Dalhousie Family Medicine and started teaching medical students and residents in 1999.

Dr. Laura Sadler

Dr. Sadler grew up in Bedford, Nova Scotia.  She graduated from Medicine at Dalhousie University in 2007 and completed her Family Medicine training in 2009.  She has been practicing family Medicine in Upper Tantallon, Halifax, Lower Sackville and Rawdon.  She has a teaching appointment from Dalhousie University, Department of Family Medicine and has been teaching medical students and residents since 2012.

Dr. Sadler is married and has two children.

Dr. Carolyn Thomson

Dr. Thomson grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She graduated from Dalhousie University in 1989 and completed her Family Medicine training in 1991. She started practicing Family Medicine in 1991. She has practiced in Halifax, Bedford, Saint John, New Brunswick, New Zealand, Holland American cruise ships and Penticton, British Columbia. Her medical interests include women’s health, obstetrics, mental health, physical health and wellness.  She has a teaching appointment from Dalhousie University and started teaching medical students and residents in 1997.

Dr. Thomson is married, loves traveling, hiking and animals of all kinds.

Dr. Joanna Zed

Dr. Zed grew up in Halifax. She graduated from Dalhousie University in 1988 and completed her Family Medicine training in 1989. She started practicing Family Medicine in 1989 and has practiced in Halifax, Lunenburg, locum work in New Brunswick and Alberta. Her medical interests include preventative medicine, office based practice, Musculoskeletal issues and procedures. Dr. Zed has a teaching appointment from Dalhousie University Department of Family Medicine and has been teaching students and residents since 1990.
