About

Who We Are

We are a teaching clinic for the Halifax site of the Department of Family Medicine, Dalhousie University and Primary Health Care, Nova Scotia Health Authority. We have been caring for our patients and teaching future physicians since 1970. We have a team-based approach to care. Our family physicians, nurses, residents, clerical staff and clinic aides work closely in a collaborative care model to provide quality patient care to our patients. The basis of this model of care is trust, respect and an understanding of each other’s skills and competencies.

We provide comprehensive care from birth to the end of life for our patients in this collaborative model.

Learners as Members of our Care Team

Being a teaching clinic, learners* are important members of our team. Most learners will be Family Medicine Residents. These are physicians who are getting additional training and experience with us before they go into practice on their own. From time to time, you will also see medical students, nursing students or trainees in other health fields. They work with our family physicians and the rest of the team.   Although we are not able to accommodate patients in the practice who never want to see learners, we do understand there may be times when you wish to book an appointment to see your family physician without a learner.

Your family physician will often watch and listen to your appointment with the learner remotely by video camera. We do not observe physical exams through our video-cameras, only the talking part of the visit. This helps us to teach the learners. It also makes sure that your care is exactly as your family physician directs. You may be asked if we can record your visit for teaching purposes, or take photos. We only record office visits if you give us your written approval in advance and the recordings are deleted after they have been reviewed with the learner.

*Note: Learners are family medicine residents, medical students or allied health professional students
